Your ADHD Patient Journey

At UK ADHD Service, we are committed to providing a clear, compassionate, and efficient journey from first contact through to long-term ADHD support. Our process is designed to give you rapid access to expert care, an accurate diagnosis, and a tailored treatment plan—whether through online assessments or in-clinic appointments.

UK ADHD Service was founded with a simple mission: to be at the forefront of tackling the ADHD crisis in the UK. Inspired by first-hand experiences of the challenges people face in accessing ADHD care, our goal is to support and empower individuals with ADHD to not only manage their symptoms but to truly thrive.

Your ADHD Patient Journey Explained

UK ADHD Service provides comprehensive support for children and adults, including online ADHD assessments, treatment follow-ups, repeat prescriptions, second opinions, and neuropsychological testing. We also offer personalised therapy, psychoeducation, ADHD coaching, and can work with your GP to create shared care plans tailored to your needs. Accessing a private ADHD assessment is simple. We offer one-to-one video call assessments with our approved psychiatrists and ADHD specialist clinicians. Below is a step-by-step guide to how your patient journey will transpire.

Step 1: Getting Started – Registration and Initial Screening

Your ADHD journey with UK ADHD Service begins with a simple booking process. You can book your private ADHD assessment directly online or speak with our dedicated team, who will guide you through your options and help you choose the most suitable appointment—whether that’s a video consultation or an in-person assessment at one of our UK clinics.

We offer flexible appointments, including both online ADHD assessments and face-to-face consultations. At every stage, our friendly admin team will provide clear guidance on what to expect, making the process as straightforward as possible.

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms may point to ADHD, we also offer a free ADHD screening test. This short, evidence-based questionnaire looks at common symptoms such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulty concentrating. Based on the results, our clinical team will advise whether a full diagnostic assessment is recommended.

Step 2: Pre-Assessment Preparation

Once your assessment is booked, you will receive a pre-assessment pack to complete. This includes medical history forms, lifestyle and sleep questionnaires, and a review of any current or past mental health conditions.

We will also ask you to provide basic health information such as blood pressure, weight, and height. In some cases, we may recommend an optional QbCheck—a clinically approved, computer-based test that measures attention, activity, and impulsivity.

This can be completed either remotely or in our clinic, and the results provide valuable, objective data to support a thorough and evidence-based ADHD diagnosis.

Step 3: Diagnostic Consultation

Your full ADHD assessment will be carried out by a UK-registered clinician. During this structured consultation, internationally recognised diagnostic tools (such as DIVA-5 or ACE+) will be used alongside your pre-assessment information and, where applicable, QbCheck results to build a clear and thorough picture of your symptoms and history.

The consultation usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes and concludes with either a confirmed ADHD diagnosis or a detailed explanation if the criteria are not met. In both cases, you will receive a comprehensive written report along with clear recommendations for next steps.

Step 4: Tailored Treatment Options

Following your diagnosis, we will offer a range of private ADHD treatment packages tailored to your individual needs. These may include:
Medication management: Initiation and titration of stimulant or non-stimulant ADHD medication.
Psychological therapies: Access to CBT, coaching, and counselling.
Combined care: Blending medication and non-pharmacological interventions.
ADHD medication works on key brain chemicals—dopamine and noradrenaline—to improve focus and attention. While not a cure, it can reduce symptoms, helping individuals feel calmer and more in control.

Step 5: Medication Initiation and Titration

If medication is recommended, your clinician will guide you through a carefully monitored titration process. Dosages are adjusted gradually to achieve the best results with minimal side effects. Regular check-ins (every 2–3 weeks by video or phone) ensure your progress is closely monitored.

Throughout this period, you’ll also have access to email support and emergency guidance, with all progress documented so any concerns can be addressed promptly.

Step 6: Confirming Stability and Monitoring Progress

Once a stable and effective medication plan is established, you’ll complete a follow-up symptom questionnaire to track progress. This helps your clinician confirm that treatment is working as intended and supporting your daily functioning.

Stability goes beyond symptom control—it also means improvements in confidence, relationships, productivity, and overall wellbeing. These areas are carefully reviewed before moving on to long-term care planning.

Step 7: Shared Care with Your GP

At this stage, we can arrange a Shared Care Agreement with your NHS GP. This enables your prescriptions to be managed by your GP, while our team continues to provide clinical reviews and ongoing support. We handle all communication with your GP and supply the necessary documentation to make the process as smooth as possible.

Please note that not all GPs accept shared care agreements. If this is the case, our team will explain your options and continue prescribing privately if needed.

Step 8: Ongoing Support and Annual Reviews

ADHD is a lifelong condition, and effective care goes beyond diagnosis or starting treatment. At UK ADHD Service, we provide ongoing support with annual reviews, repeat prescriptions, QbCheck monitoring, and continuous access to our ADHD-trained clinicians.

In addition, we offer non-clinical support such as:
ADHD-specific coaching
Family and relationship support
Educational and workplace accommodations
Our holistic model ensures that every aspect of your wellbeing is supported.

"I've never been listened to since I've been able to go to the doctors myself for help... It wasn't until I seeked private help with Dr Kooner at PrivateADHD, where I was finally listened to and taken seriously. He went through everything in so much detail and diagnosed me with ADHD. We have regular catch ups to ensure the medication is working for me, which is great... FAQ arrow

What if I decide to take medication?

FAQ arrow

For adults with ADHD, treatment often includes stimulant medications such as Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and Amphetamine-based drugs (Adderall, Vyvanse). These medications help improve focus, attention, and impulse control and are usually prescribed in higher doses compared to those for children. Non-stimulant options like Atomoxetine (Strattera) are also available, particularly for adults who have additional conditions like anxiety or heart issues.

ADHD titration involves starting with the lowest dose of ADHD medication and gradually increasing it. It may take up to a week to notice a difference in your symptoms when taking the medication.

It’s common to have a few side effects with ADHD medication, but titration is how we avoid this by gradually increasing the dose. Some side effects are reduced appetite, weight loss, transient blood pressure increases, headaches and trouble sleeping.

How much does ADHD medication cost?
FAQ arrow

Medication is recommended as the first-line treatment in ADHD for adults and certain age groups in childrenwith clinically significant impairment in their life (NICE, 2008). Any medication must be considered carefully along with any health concerns or other issues that would contraindicate a trial of medication. Taking into account your diagnosis and symptoms, consideration of a trial of medication may be appropriate to determine whether this would assist you with your ADHD symptoms. Medications have been found to improve attention span, task completion and self-organisation, whilst reducing impulsivity, distractibility, and restlessness.

There are many myths about treatment. Treatment carries fewer risks than not taking treatment. Please find a useful video discussing common myths around ADHD medication: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCIT0YbNSCU Life with unrecognised ADHD often leads to mental health problems. It is important to consider the impact of these as well as ADHD on wellbeing. Safety Notice: ADHD medications can sometimes be unsafe for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. Therefore, an interim evaluation, such as an ECG, may be required from your GP (you will be advised if you need these investigations).
